Their parent is looking at a phone, replying to a message. By the time the parent looks up, the moment has passed. No one has done anything obviously wrong. The child moves on, the parent finishes the message, and the day continues.

The parent has missed a chance to respond: “A bus! There it goes.” One missed exchange is ordinary. Repeated interruptions, however, raise a useful question about the conversations young children have throughout the day.

A study published in JAMA Pediatrics on October 4, 2026 examined associations between parents’ technology use, missed communication cues, and language production and comprehension in children aged 13 to 18 months. It draws attention to something discussions about screen time can overlook: adults’ device use during opportunities for interaction.

For parents, the practical question is when phone use gets in the way of noticing and responding to a child.

What the Study Can—and Cannot—Tell Us

The researchers examined these relationships in a cross-sectional study. That design can identify associations, but it cannot establish which came first or show that parental technology use caused differences in children’s language abilities.

That distinction matters. A link between missed communication cues and language skills does not mean that answering a message will cause a language delay. Nor does research involving children aged 13 to 18 months automatically explain what happens at every age.

The study offers a reason to examine interruptions more closely.

How often do they happen?

Do they occur while a child is trying to share something?

Does the adult notice and return to the exchange?

These questions give families a more specific starting point than simply counting phone minutes.

How an Interruption Can Change an Exchange

A baby might look at a dog, point toward it, and make a sound. An adult who notices can respond, “Yes, that’s a dog. Look at its long ears!” The child hears a word connected to something they are already interested in. If the child looks back at the dog or tries to repeat the sound, the adult can continue the exchange.

This back-and-forth connects the child’s interest with words and a response from another person. The child can take part by looking, pointing, making a sound, or trying a word.

Now imagine the same moment while the parent is absorbed in a phone. The child points, but the adult misses it. By the time the parent looks up, the dog may have passed and the child’s attention may have moved elsewhere.

An interruption can therefore remove an opportunity for a shared exchange, even if the parent later names the object. That is different from saying that every missed response causes harm. Parents cannot catch every gesture or sound, and children do not need continuous adult commentary.

A useful habit to notice is whether checking the phone regularly pulls attention away during meals, play, or other times when a child is trying to engage.

Three Practical Changes to Try

The following are practical ways to make room for interaction, rather than interventions proven by this single study. Start with whichever fits your family’s routine.

Choose one routine with fewer phone interruptions

Pick a manageable part of the day: a meal, a few minutes of play, or looking at a book together. Put the phone out of reach or silence nonessential notifications. There is no need to fill the time with questions or vocabulary practice; leave room to notice what interests your child.

Respond to the child’s cue, then pause

If your toddler reaches for food and says “more,” you might answer, “More rice? Here you go.” If they point at a picture, name what they seem to be looking at. Then pause to give them a turn, whether that comes as a look, a gesture, a sound, or a word.

Return to the interaction after necessary phone use

Parents need phones for work, directions, and family communication. When an interruption ends, put the device down and look back at your child. If they are still interested, pick up the exchange: “You were showing me your truck.” If they have moved on, follow their new interest.

Make Room for Conversation Without Adding Pressure

Supporting language development does not require turning every activity into a lesson. During shared reading, for example, parents can pause at a picture, comment on what the child notices, and let the child turn the page. Finishing the book can wait.

The same approach works during ordinary routines. Naming a piece of clothing while getting dressed or responding to a sound outside gives a child something immediate to connect with language. These exchanges can be brief and fit around the other things a family needs to do.

Parents also need breaks. Some phone use may happen while a child is happily playing independently, with no attempt to communicate being missed. It helps to notice the context before deciding what to change.

Start by observing one routine. If you often look up to find that your child has stopped pointing, calling, or showing you something, that may be a useful place to reduce interruptions. When you do miss a cue, you can reconnect and continue from there.

              Trustpilot

Learn authentic Chinese from those who live and breathe the culture.

Specially tailored for kids aged 3-18 around the world!

            Get started free!

A toddler points toward a passing bus and makes an excited sound.
