Another might understand the material but stay quiet during group activities because they’re worried about what classmates will think. These experiences may not show up on a report card, yet they can shape how a child approaches learning every day.

A 2026 study published in the European Journal of Psychology of Education offers a useful way to think about this. Researchers Halis Sakız and Zeynep Denktaş examined school climate, students’ sense of belonging, and academic achievement among 1,033 students in public secondary schools in Türkiye.

Their findings suggest that academic performance is connected not only to what happens during lessons, but also to how students experience school—particularly their relationships with teachers and peers, and whether school rules seem fair.

So what does this mean to parents? And how can you tell whether your child’s school experience is helping them learn?

What Does It Mean for a Child to Feel Like They Belong at School?

School belonging is a child’s sense that they are accepted, respected, and valued at school. It doesn’t mean they have to be popular or enjoy every class. It means they generally feel comfortable being part of the school community.

Think about the difference between two students who get the same math problem wrong.

One student feels safe enough to ask the teacher for help, work through the mistake, and try again. The other worries that asking a question will make them look foolish, so they stay quiet and hope the teacher moves on.

Both students may have the same academic ability. But their experiences in the classroom are very different.

That difference matters because learning involves more than getting answers right. Children also need opportunities to ask questions, make mistakes, work with others, and try unfamiliar things. When students feel uncomfortable or excluded, those everyday parts of learning can become harder.

Three Parts of School Life That Matter Beyond Grades

The study looked at several aspects of school climate. Three are particularly worth paying attention to as a parent.

The Relationship Between Students and Teachers

A teacher can influence how comfortable a child feels asking for help, admitting confusion, or trying something difficult.

Consider a student who keeps getting fractions wrong. If the teacher responds patiently and helps the student work through the steps, the child may be more willing to try again. If the student feels embarrassed or dismissed, they may stop asking questions—even when they need help.

Of course, teachers can’t make every lesson easy or give every student constant attention. The important thing is whether children generally feel that their teacher will listen, explain, and treat them with respect.

In the study, teacher relationships were among the school-climate factors associated with students’ academic achievement. This doesn’t prove that a supportive teacher automatically leads to higher grades, but it reinforces the value of looking beyond test scores when thinking about a child’s learning environment.

Relationships With Classmates

Friendships and peer interactions can make a school day feel easier—or much more stressful.

A child may enjoy a subject but dread group work because classmates regularly ignore their ideas. Another may feel comfortable sharing an answer because their peers listen, even when someone gets it wrong.

These moments can affect how willing students are to participate. A child who expects to be included may be more likely to contribute. One who expects to be left out may hold back.

The researchers found that students’ feelings of belonging and rejection helped explain part of the relationship between peer relationships and academic achievement. In other words, the way students experience their place among classmates may be one piece of the connection between social life at school and academic outcomes.

Parents don’t need to solve every disagreement between children. But it’s worth paying attention if your child repeatedly avoids group activities, says nobody wants to work with them, or seems unusually worried about classmates’ reactions.

Whether School Rules Feel Fair

Rules are another part of the school experience that can be easy to overlook.

Children don’t have to like every classroom rule. They do, however, benefit from understanding what the rules are, why they exist, and how they are applied.

Imagine two students talking during a lesson. If both are treated similarly, they may see the teacher’s response as fair, even if they don’t like the consequence. But if one student is corrected while the other is repeatedly allowed to do the same thing, the first child may start to feel that the classroom is not a fair place.

That feeling can affect how students view their school and their place in it.

In the researchers’ statistical model, students’ sense of belonging and rejection helped account for the relationship between perceived fairness of school rules and academic achievement. The model did not show a significant direct relationship between rule fairness and achievement once the other factors were taken into account.

For parents, the practical takeaway isn’t that every school rule must feel fair to every child. It’s that consistent expectations and respectful explanations can help children understand what to expect from the adults around them.

Why Good Grades May Not Tell the Whole Story

It’s tempting to assume that a child who earns good grades is doing just fine. Sometimes that’s true. But academic success doesn’t necessarily tell us how comfortable a child feels at school.

A student may complete every assignment and still be afraid to speak up. Another may get solid test scores but feel isolated during lunch or group projects. These children might not need immediate academic intervention, but their experiences are still worth understanding.

The reverse is also true. A child who is struggling academically may feel connected to their teacher and classmates. That sense of support can be a useful starting point when figuring out what kind of help they need.

The study’s statistical model accounted for 31% of the variation in academic achievement among the participating students. That figure refers to the model as a whole—not to school belonging alone—and it does not mean that changing a child’s sense of belonging will produce a particular improvement in grades.

Still, the findings are a reminder that achievement is associated with more than academic skills in isolation. The relationships and experiences surrounding a student’s learning may matter, too.

Five Questions Parents Can Ask About Their Child’s School Experience

You don’t need to turn every after-school conversation into an interview. A few open-ended questions, asked at a relaxed moment, can help you learn more than “How was school?” usually does.

Instead of asking…

Try asking…

“Did you have a good day?”

“What was the best part of your day?”

“Did you understand the lesson?”

“Was there anything you wanted to ask but didn’t?”

“Do you have friends?”

“Who did you spend time with today?”

“Did you participate in class?”

“Did you get a chance to share your ideas today?”

“Was your teacher fair?”

“What happened when someone made a mistake or broke a rule?”

The goal isn’t to look for a problem in every answer. Some days, your child may simply be tired or not feel like talking. That’s normal.

What matters more is the pattern over time. If your child regularly says they have no one to work with, feels nervous about asking for help, or believes adults treat students unfairly, it may be worth having a more focused conversation.

You can also ask the teacher what they notice in class. Does your child participate comfortably? Do they work with different classmates? Are there situations where they seem hesitant or withdrawn? Comparing what you hear at home with what the teacher sees can give you a clearer picture.

The Goal Is More Than Academic Success

I would never tell parents to stop caring about grades. Academic progress matters, and children deserve the instruction and support they need to learn well.

But I also think we should make room for a broader definition of a successful school experience.

A child should have opportunities to learn challenging material, make mistakes without feeling humiliated, ask for help, and build respectful relationships with teachers and peers. Those experiences are valuable in their own right, not simply because they may be associated with better academic outcomes.

The next time you ask your child how school went, consider looking beyond the test score or homework assignment. Ask whether they felt included, whether someone helped them when they needed it, or whether there was a moment when they felt proud of contributing.

The answers may not always be easy to hear, and one conversation will not tell you everything. But over time, these small questions can help you understand how your child is experiencing school.

Good grades tell us something important about learning. Helping children feel that they belong reminds us that there is a person behind those grades. Both deserve our attention.

              Trustpilot

Learn authentic Chinese from those who live and breathe the culture.

Specially tailored for kids aged 3-18 around the world!

            Get started free!

When parents think about how their child is doing at school, grades are often the first thing they check.
