Before schools can fully take advantage of any of those innovations, many students still need help with something far less futuristic: reading accurately and understanding mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/research.k12academics.com\/K12-Academics-State-of-K12-Education-2026-Report.html\">The State of K-12 Education in America 2026 report <\/a><\/em>describes the academic recovery from the pandemic as incomplete. That assessment is supported by recent results from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/nationsreportcard\/about\/\">National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)<\/a>. Reading scores remain weak, the recovery in mathematics has been uneven, and some of the students who were already struggling have lost even more ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For parents, the global state of education may seem somewhat abstract and difficult to relate to their own children; however, by paying closer attention to the details of their child&#8217;s studies, one will discover that these issues are already manifesting in their daily learning. A child who can read every word on a page but cannot explain what the passage means, or a student who remembers a math formula until the question is presented in a slightly different form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are not small gaps. As children move through school, they become increasingly expensive ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"reading-is-where-the-cracks-show-early\"><\/span>Reading Is Where the Cracks Show Early<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest reading results are difficult to dismiss. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationsreportcard.gov\/reports\/mathematics\/2024\/g4_8\/national-trends\/\">2024 NAEP assessment<\/a>, <strong>40% of fourth-graders performed below the Basic level in reading, while 31% reached or exceeded Proficient. Twelfth-grade reading scores were also below their 2019 levels, with some of the sharpest declines appearing among lower-performing students.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of those numbers extends well beyond English class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the fourth or fifth grade, reading is no longer a skill required solely for English or literature classes; Other subjects also begin to demand a certain level of reading proficiency. For instance, students must read and comprehend scientific concepts and explanations, interpret historical documents, and decipher the meaning of mathematical word problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why the issue of inadequate reading proficiency is easily overlooked by parents and teachers, as attention tends to focus primarily on scores and grades. A student might appear to be underperforming in a subject when the underlying cause is actually a limited vocabulary that prevents them from grasping the true meaning of the questions; similarly, another student might fully comprehend the concept of fractions when it is explained orally, yet struggle significantly once that same concept is embedded within a lengthy text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As students get older, textbooks become denser, and teachers expect them to learn more independently. There is less room for a shaky reading foundation to hide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"math-recovery-has-left-some-students-behind\"><\/span>Math Recovery Has Left Some Students Behind<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mathematics tells a somewhat different story. There has been improvement, just not enough to call the recovery complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fourth-grade math scores rose between 2022 and 2024, although they remained below their pre-pandemic level. At eighth grade, the national average barely moved. More revealing was what happened underneath that average: stronger students made gains while some lower-performing students slipped further behind.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who has watched a child learn math will recognize why this matters. Mathematics has a long memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fractions turn up again in ratios. Ratios feed into proportions. Arithmetic fluency eventually matters in algebra. A student can sometimes survive a weak patch by memorizing the procedure that happens to be on this week&#8217;s worksheet, but that strategy has an expiration date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A question eventually arrives that looks unfamiliar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is usually the moment when the difference between <strong>knowing a procedure<\/strong> and <strong>understanding the mathematics behind it<\/strong> becomes obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also why a simple score can be misleading. A student who gets most homework questions right may still depend heavily on examples, calculators, or familiar question formats. Change the wording, remove the worked example, or ask them to explain why the answer makes sense, and the underlying weakness suddenly appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ai-makes-this-problem-more-interesting-not-less-important\"><\/span>AI Makes This Problem More Interesting, Not Less Important<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an obvious objection to all of this. If AI can explain a difficult passage, solve an equation, and produce a polished essay in seconds, how much foundational knowledge will children really need?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Probably quite a lot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/research.k12academics.com\/K12-Academics-State-of-K12-Education-2026-Report.html\">The State of K-12 Education in America 2026 reports<\/a><\/em> that AI is already common in middle- and high-school learning. That changes what students can do quickly. It does not remove the need to judge whether what a machine produces is any good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a student asking an AI tool to solve a word problem. The system returns a confident-looking explanation and a numerical answer. Without basic number sense, the student may have no idea that the result is wildly unrealistic. The same problem appears in reading and writing: a generated paragraph can sound authoritative while misreading the source, inventing a detail, or quietly changing the meaning of an argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where foundational knowledge starts to look less old-fashioned than it did a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A student does not need to memorize everything that a machine can retrieve. But they do need enough knowledge to recognize nonsense, ask better questions, and notice when an explanation does not quite add up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an AI-rich classroom, that distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-average-score-is-not-the-whole-story\"><\/span>The Average Score Is Not the Whole Story<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the most worrying part of the current <strong>K-12<\/strong> picture is the growing distance between students who are doing well and those who are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National averages tend to flatten that difference. A modest movement in the overall math score, for example, can hide a situation in which higher-performing students improve while struggling students move in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For families, that is a reason to pay attention to specific gaps rather than broad labels such as \u201cgood at math\u201d or \u201cnot a strong reader.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sixth-grader who struggles with algebra may actually have a much older problem with fractions. A child who dislikes reading may be decoding words perfectly well but getting lost when sentences become more complex. Those are very different problems, and they need different responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a practical reason to catch them early. Missing one idea in mathematics can make the next unit harder; missing several can make an entire subject feel mysterious. Reading gaps accumulate in a similar way because unfamiliar vocabulary and weaker comprehension make it harder to acquire new knowledge through reading itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time a student says, \u201cI&#8217;m just bad at this,\u201d there may already be several layers to untangle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-real-understanding-looks-like\"><\/span>What Real Understanding Looks Like<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents understandably look first at grades. They are useful, but they do not always tell the whole story anymore. Homework may involve hints from an online platform, help from an adult, or increasingly an AI assistant. A polished assignment can therefore conceal quite a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conversation often reveals more.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In mathematics, ask children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why does this method work?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you solve the problem another way?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does your answer seem reasonable?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In reading, ask children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What was the main idea?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why did the author include that detail?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you explain the passage in your own words?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of understanding is also what allows knowledge to travel from one situation to another. A child has not really mastered percentages because they completed twenty nearly identical percentage questions. Mastery becomes more convincing when they can recognize the same mathematical relationship in a discount, a sports statistic, or a real-world comparison they have never seen before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%e2%80%9cback-to-basics%e2%80%9d-is-the-wrong-phrase\"><\/span>\u201cBack to Basics\u201d Is the Wrong Phrase<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Calls for stronger reading and mathematics foundations are sometimes described as a return to basics. That makes the idea sound nostalgic, as though education has to choose between traditional skills and modern technology. If you share this view, you are overlooking an important relationship: students with strong reading and mathematical reasoning skills are better able to utilize technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There is no such choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI tutoring, personalized learning and adaptive educational software may genuinely improve the way children learn. Some tools can identify mistakes quickly, vary the level of practice and give a student another explanation when the first one does not work. Schools will almost certainly use more of this technology, not less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That may be the less glamorous lesson in the 2026 education data, but it is an important one. New tools are arriving quickly. Human learning is still built more slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children need time to read, struggle with ideas, make mistakes, explain what they think, and gradually turn unfamiliar concepts into knowledge they can actually use.
