But what is a gifted and talented program, and how does a child get into one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This guide explains how U.S. schools identify gifted students, how CogAT percentile scores may be used, why a 95th\u201397th percentile score is not a nationwide cutoff, and what other evidence schools may consider. <\/span>What Is a Gifted and Talented Program?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A Gifted and Talented Program<\/strong>, often called G&T, GT, GATE, or gifted education<\/strong>, provides educational services designed for students whose abilities or learning needs go beyond what the standard classroom typically provides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current federal definition describes gifted students as those who show high achievement capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services or activities, which are not ordinarily provided by the school. However, states and school districts are not required to use the federal definition, so the meaning of \u201cgifted\u201d can vary across the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gifted education is therefore not simply a reward for getting good grades. A high-achieving student may earn strong grades, because they work hard and master the regular curriculum. A gifted learner may also need faster pacing, deeper content, more complex problems, or opportunities to study beyond the grade-level curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no single national model for gifted education. Depending on the district, services can include classroom differentiation, pull-out enrichment, advanced classes, flexible grouping, acceleration, or specialized programs. NAGC describes gifted education as a continuum of services rather than one standard program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The purpose is not simply to give gifted students \u201cmore work.\u201d Effective gifted education changes the level, depth, pace, or complexity of learning so that the instruction better matches the student’s demonstrated needs. NAGC standards include curriculum and instruction, program design, identification, evaluation, and social-emotional support as important parts of quality gifted programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>How to Get Into a Gifted and Talented Program<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is no single national application process for gifted and talented programs in the United States<\/strong>. Identification and placement decisions are made largely at the state and local level, so the requirements can differ substantially between districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many families, the process looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start With Your School District’s Eligibility Rules<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before preparing for any test, find out which identification system your district uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some districts use universal screening. Others rely on teacher, parent, or school referrals. Some allow multiple entry points throughout elementary or middle school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, Poudre School District in Colorado identifies students through grade 3\u20138 screening, referral, or transfer with a portable gifted identification from another district. Its gifted services are also managed at the individual school level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why parents should not assume that another family’s CogAT score or admission process will apply to their own child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complete the Required Screening or Testing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many districts use an ability assessment such as the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)<\/strong>. Other districts may use achievement tests, nonverbal assessments, local screening tools, or combinations of measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CogAT measures reasoning abilities across verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal areas. Its reports can provide age percentile ranks, grade percentile ranks, standard age scores, and other measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A strong score can help a student qualify for further evaluation, but a test score alone does not automatically guarantee admission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
