Welcome to Our ABC Stories!\r\n\r\nIn 2023, WuKong Education’s “Tell Us Your ABC Story: Global Contest” invited Chinese families worldwide to share their tales. Actor Daniel Wu and author Vincent Yee judged 21 finalists, awarding Mimi Peters from Gibraltar the Family Storytelling Excellence Award for her touching story “The Winning Battle.” Mimi’s heartfelt journey teaching her son Chinese, showcased through delicate writing, resonated with Judges Daniel Wu and Vincent Yee, highlighting the challenges and surprises in the learning process.<\/blockquote>\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nOnce upon a time, in the vibrant city of Hong Kong, there lived a loving and determined mother named Li Mei. Li Mei had grown up in a bilingual environment, speaking both Chinese Mandarin and English \ufb02uently. She believed that language was a key to opening doors in the world, and she wanted her six-year-old son, Titan, to have the same advantage she had.\r\n\r\nDetermined to help Titan master both languages perfectly, Li Mei decided to arrange for him to study Chinese online for two hours every week. She enrolled him in a virtual language program with high hopes for his progress. Little did she know that the journey would be \ufb01lled with challenges.\r\n\r\n\"\u514d\u8d39\r\n\r\nIn the beginning, it seemed as though progress was a distant dream. Titan would often get distracted during the lessons, his attention span drifting away to his toys or the world outside the window. Li Mei would struggle to keep him engaged, resorting to promising him snacks as a reward for paying attention. The lessons became a constant battle of focus and concentration, with little improvement in Titan\u2019s language skills.\r\n\r\nMonths\u00a0went\u00a0by,\u00a0and\u00a0Li\u00a0Mei’s\u00a0determination\u00a0started\u00a0to\u00a0waver.\u00a0Doubts\u00a0began\u00a0to\u00a0creep\u00a0into her mind, and she couldn’t help wondering if\u00a0she\u00a0was pushing Titan too hard or if\u00a0her methods\u00a0were\u00a0ine\ufb00ective.\u00a0She pondered whether\u00a0she\u00a0should\u00a0let him\u00a0learn\u00a0athis\u00a0own pace\u00a0or\u00a0seek\u00a0alternative methods to nurture his language skills.\r\n\r\nOne\u00a0day, as\u00a0Li\u00a0Mei\u00a0and\u00a0Titan\u00a0were\u00a0having\u00a0a\u00a0conversation\u00a0with\u00a0their\u00a0family\u00a0in\u00a0Hong\u00a0Kong,\u00a0something\u00a0remarkable\u00a0happened. They\u00a0were\u00a0celebrating\u00a0LiMei’s\u00a0mother’s\u00a0birthday, and\u00a0the\u00a0family\u00a0gathered\u00a0around\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0joyous\u00a0occasion.\u00a0Li\u00a0Mei\u00a0was\u00a0chatting\u00a0with\u00a0her\u00a0mother\u00a0in\u00a0Chinese, sharing\u00a0fond\u00a0memories\u00a0and\u00a0laughter.\r\n\r\nUnbeknownst\u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0\u00a0Li\u00a0\u00a0Mei, \u00a0Titan\u00a0\u00a0was\u00a0\u00a0listening\u00a0\u00a0intently\u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0\u00a0their\u00a0\u00a0conversation, his\u00a0\u00a0eyes glimmering with curiosity. As the conversation reached its peak, and amidst the joyful atmosphere, Titan suddenly spoke up, surprising everyone present. “\u751f\u65e5\u5feb\u4e50\uff0c\u5976\u5976\uff01 (Happy birthday, Grandma!)” he exclaimed, his pronunciation nearly \ufb02awless.\r\n\r\n\"\u514d\u8d39\r\n\r\nLiMei was astounded. Her heart swelled with pride and joy as she realised that all the e\ufb00ort and struggle had not been in vain. Titan had been absorbing the language all along, even though it seemed as though he was not making any progress during his online lessons.\r\n\r\nTears\u00a0of happiness\u00a0welled\u00a0up\u00a0in\u00a0Li\u00a0Mei’s\u00a0eyes\u00a0as\u00a0she\u00a0hugged\u00a0her\u00a0son\u00a0tightly.\u00a0She\u00a0realised that\u00a0language\u00a0learning\u00a0was\u00a0not\u00a0solely\u00a0about\u00a0structured\u00a0lessons\u00a0and\u00a0textbooks\u00a0but\u00a0also\u00a0about the\u00a0environment\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0everyday\u00a0interactions\u00a0that\u00a0surrounded\u00a0them.\u00a0Titan\u00a0had\u00a0been\u00a0silently\u00a0absorbing\u00a0the\u00a0language\u00a0through\u00a0their\u00a0conversations\u00a0and\u00a0had\u00a0\ufb01nally\u00a0found\u00a0the\u00a0con\ufb01dence\u00a0to\u00a0express\u00a0himself.\r\n\r\nFrom that day forward, Li Mei approached language learning with a new perspective.
