Welcome to Our ABC Stories!\r\n\r\nIn 2023, WuKong Education’s “Tell Us Your ABC Story” Global Story Contest invited Chinese families worldwide to share their tales. Actor Daniel Wu and author Vincent Yee, along with the WuKong Judge Team, carefully selected 21 finalists from a myriad of touching submissions. “Fleeting Memory Lasting Love” by Enya Yu, aged 10, has been honored with the “Future Writer Award.” Enya’s narrative invites us into the world of her memories, capturing the essence of fleeting moments and enduring love. Take a moment to be inspired by her incredible story, offering a glimpse into global Chinese experiences.<\/blockquote>\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n11:58 \u2026 11:59 \u2026 and the clock struck 12. Today was the day that \u201c\u7237\u7237\u201d and \u201c\u5976\u5976\u201d were coming to prepare for the coming of Lunar New Year. But, only \u201c\u5976\u5976\u201d came. I sat solemnly while gazing at the photograph of me and \u201c\u7237\u7237\u201d proudly holding a painting we created. Suddenly, my door \ufb02ung open.\r\n\r\n\u201c\u5976\u5976 is here!\u201d Lenna, my 16-year-old sister exclaimed.\r\n\r\n\u201cNice\u00a0\u2026\u201d\u00a0I\u00a0responded\u00a0dully\u00a0while\u00a0still\u00a0thinking\u00a0about\u00a0\u201c\u7237\u7237.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201c\u7237\u7237\u201d and I used to paint sceneries and make dumplings together every Lunar New Year \u2026 until he su\ufb00ered a heart attack a month ago. I decided to lie in my room for the rest of the day. I couldn\u2019tstop thinking about the time \u201c\u7237\u7237\u201d helped me paint a beautiful landscape of his home. When we \ufb01nished, he told me he was extremely proud of me, and that noone else could measure up to my talent, not even him. Tears gushed down my cheeks as I recalled those happy moments; all I wanted to do was to run up and hug him one last time.\r\n\r\n\"Free\r\n\r\nSuddenly, my thoughts were interrupted by a cheery voice, \u201c\u8389\u8389\uff0c\u6211\u5e26\u4e86\u4f60\u6700\u559c\u6b22\u7684\u756a \u8304\u9e21\u86cb\u9762!\u201d I looked up and saw my \u201c\u5976\u5976\u201d wearing trendy clothing and accessories, but her\u00a0eyes\u00a0were\u00a0blood-red\u00a0from\u00a0crying\u00a0and\u00a0her\u00a0eye\u00a0bags\u00a0deepened\u00a0from\u00a0exhaustion.\u00a0I\u00a0wiped the\u00a0tears\u00a0from\u00a0my\u00a0face\u00a0and\u00a0smiled, but\u00a0I\u00a0was\u00a0still\u00a0adrift\u00a0in\u00a0my\u00a0sea\u00a0of\u00a0unorganized\u00a0thoughts.\r\n\r\nAfter hours of endless cleaning in preparation for the Lunar New Year, wesat down to eat my \u201c\u5976\u5976\u2019s\u201d famous egg and tomato noodles. As we ate, small talk and compliments couldn\u2019t disguise the fact that things weren\u2019t the same this year. Without \u201c\u7237\u7237\u2019s\u201d goofy jokes and comical personality, a sense of uneasiness and silence surrounded the dining table. My dad was right. \u201c\u7237\u7237\u201d was the life of the party.\r\n\r\nThat night, I had another dream about \u201c\u7237\u7237.\u201d I was at the graveyard site during the funeral and it was time to pay our respects. I trudged to my \u201c\u7237\u7237\u2019s\u201d casket and stared into his peacefully closed eyes. All of a sudden, his eyes shot open and he stared straight at me, sitting up in confusion.\r\n\r\n\u201c\u7237\u7237! \u7237\u7237! Oh my God!\u201d My eyes widened and\u00a0a\u00a0smile\u00a0spread\u00a0across\u00a0my\u00a0face.\u00a0\u201c\u4f60\u662f\u8c01?\u201d \u201c\u7237\u7237\u201dquestioned. My smile wavered. I stared at \u201c\u7237\u7237,\u201d in\u00a0shock.\r\n\r\n\u201c\u6211\u662f\u4f60\u7684\u5b59\u5973\u2026\u00a0\u2026\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201c\u6211\u6839\u672c\u5c31\u6ca1\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u5b59\u5973\uff01 \u213d\r\n\r\nI\u00a0woke\u00a0up\u00a0in\u00a0tears\u00a0and\u00a0clenched\u00a0my\u00a0stu\ufb00ed\u00a0tiger.\u00a0Nightmares\u00a0like\u00a0those\u00a0kept\u00a0me\u00a0up\u00a0ever\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0since\u00a0he\u00a0was\u00a0gone. After\u00a0a\u00a0night\u00a0of\u00a0twisting\u00a0and\u00a0turning, I \ufb01nally\u00a0woke\u00a0up\u00a0andate\u00a0breakfast.\r\n\r\nWe did more cleaning, the weekend eventually came to an end and tomorrow I would have to wake up at 6 A.M. to step foot into the building I now most dread\u2014school. I laid my red Chinese dress (\u65d7\u888d) on my table for tomorrow. A writing assignment and a practice test that were assigned for homework lay on my desk, waiting patiently to be completed. How- ever, I only did a little bit of both. I was once a stereotypical straight-A student, but recently, Cs and Ds stung my report card.\r\n\r\n\"Free\r\n\r\nThe next morning, the alarm on my phone screamed. I slipped on my red dress, and put on my red tiger earrings. Red \u2026 \u201cThe lucky color.\u201d I would need luck today. I packed my backpack with all of my school things, trying not to think about my test and assignment. I grabbed my backpack and slumped downstairs for breakfast, checking my phone for any new messages. None. That\u2019s OK. I ate some Chinese rice cakes and cookies and washed them down with some tea.\r\n\r\nAt\u00a0school,a few people looked\u00a0at me\u00a0up\u00a0and\u00a0down. I\u00a0thought\u00a0they\u00a0were\u00a0going\u00a0to\u00a0\ufb01nd\u00a0me\u00a0weird, but\u00a0to\u00a0my\u00a0surprise, someone\u00a0encouragingly\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cSlay,\u00a0girl!\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cHeyyyyyyyyyy\u00a0Lilyyyyyyyyyy!\u00a0I\u00a0got\u00a0this\u00a0phone\u00a0case\u00a0for\u00a0you\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0start\u00a0of the\u00a0Lunar\u00a0\u00a0New Year!\u201d A familiar voice exclaimed in a sweet,\u00a0sassy tone.\u00a0It was\u00a0my\u00a0best\u00a0friend,\u00a0Nicole.\r\n\r\nI\u00a0turned\u00a0around\u00a0and\u00a0said, \u201cOMG! It\u2019s\u00a0faaaaantastic! I\u00a0loooveit!\u201d\r\n\r\nNicole\u00a0was\u00a0my\u00a0favorite\u00a0person. She\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0only\u00a0person\u00a0who\u00a0could\u00a0get\u00a0me\u00a0to\u00a0stop\u00a0thinking\u00a0about\u00a0\u201c\u7237\u7237.\u00a0\u201d\r\n\r\nA big grin appeared on my face and I put on my new phone case. I went straight to math class, where I would have to take the test I had barely studied for. As Mr. Chen handed me my paper, my heart started beating very fast and my hands began shaking. My breath shook with every question I read. I kept thinking about “\u7237\u7237.”\r\n\r\nMy second period was Language Arts. Our assignment was to write a haiku, which was quite the opposite of what I had written. Although I started writing a haiku, my hands seemingly tookover my mind. As Mrs. Rickeread through the turned-in Haikus, I noticed she suddenly had a puzzled look on her face. I knew she had got to mine. My stomach twisted into a knot as I\u00a0 sawhereyes scanning my poem about “\u7237\u7237”.\r\n

I look up<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>to you<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

For everything Ido<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

You support<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>me<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Love<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>me<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

But now you\u2019re<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>lost<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Rest<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>in<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>peace<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\r\nAfter 45 minutes of lecturing, the bell rang, and the teacher dismissed the class. As I wandered out of my seat, Mrs. Ricke stopped and asked me, \u201cLily, can you come to my room after school?\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cUh \u2026 Sure,\u201d I murmured. It had to be about\u00a0my\u00a0assignment.\r\n\r\nAfter\u00a0the\u00a0last\u00a0period, I\u00a0was\u00a0back\u00a0in\u00a0Mrs.\u00a0Ricke\u2019sclassroom.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0noticed\u00a0your\u00a0grades\u00a0have been\u00a0slipping. Is\u00a0there\u00a0anything\u00a0I\u00a0can\u00a0do\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0you?\u201d\u00a0She\u00a0asked.\r\n\r\n\u201cNo-no, I\u2019m\u00a0okay. It\u2019s\u00a0just\u00a0that\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0been\u00a0adeath\u00a0in\u00a0my\u00a0family.\u201d I\u00a0blinked,\u00a0trying\u00a0to\u00a0hold back\u00a0tears.\r\n\r\n\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0so\u00a0sorry\u00a0to\u00a0hear\u00a0about\u00a0your\u00a0loss. No\u00a0one\u00a0can\u00a0ever\u00a0prepare\u00a0us\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0loss\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0loved\u00a0one,\u00a0but\u00a0I\u00a0am\u00a0here\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0in\u00a0any\u00a0way\u00a0I\u00a0can.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cThanks,\u201d I sighed. As I walked out of the classroom, Mrs. Ricke mentioned, \u201cWriting about your loved one can help you grieve loss. It\u2019s what helped me during the death of my mother. Writing helped me live my best life, something I\u2019m con\ufb01dent your loved one would have \u00a0wanted \u00a0for \u00a0you.\u201d \u00a0Her \u00a0advice sounded reasonable, but when I arrived home, it had completely slipped my mind.\r\n\r\nOur house was red from top\u00a0to bottom,\u00a0decorated\u00a0with\u00a0lanterns,\u00a0\ufb01recrackers,\u00a0and\u00a0phrases\u00a0like \u201c\u65b0\u5e74\u5feb\u4e50\u201d and the upside down \u201c\u798f.\u201d After admiring it\u00a0all,\u00a0I\u00a0needed\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0make\u00a0the dumplings.\r\n\r\n\"Free\r\n\r\nTwo hours passed by and I got three red envelopes, each \ufb01lled with $100. After putting it in my money stash and thanking my family, we all sat around the dinner table and said our prayers.\r\n\r\nThe night was \ufb01lled with laughter and joy. Jokes were being made every \ufb01ve seconds and conversation was \ufb02owing out of my mouth. I\u2019d never been this talkative before. For one night, it felt like things were normal again. The aroma of the dumplings and xiaolongbao \ufb01lled the room, but my eyes wandered toward my favorite dish, the noodles.\r\n\r\nSoon after, we all raced to the TV to watch our favorite program, while munching on our\u00a0\u00a0moon cakes. We watched the CCTV New Year\u2019s Gala. Famous singers were performing the \u00a0top songs of the year, one being \u201c\u6211\u4eec.\u201d When the comedians tookover the show, my stomach \u00a0started cramping as a result of my constant laughing and giggling. Even my \u201c\u5976\u5976\u201d had a\u00a0\u00a0smile on her face. That night was the \ufb01rst night I slept like a baby, without any nightmares.\r\n\r\nLess than 12 hours later, all the fun diminished and it was time to return back to reality. School. I didn\u2019t expect school to be any di\ufb00erent until Mrs. Ricke whispered after class, \u201cHey, Lily! Don\u2019t forget about my advice. See you tomorrow!\u201d I nodded.\r\n\r\nFor the rest of the day, I thought about her advice. Writing \u2026 could it really help? Later on, I went to bed, but I lay awake thinking about Mrs. Ricke\u2019swords, so I decided to try out her advice. I sat down and started writing the piece you are now reading. Despite my doubts, writing helped me process some of my ambiguous feelings. As my \u201c\u7237\u7237\u201d would always try to say in English to all of my work, \u201cYour writing is a piece of art.\u201d \u201c\u7237\u7237,\u201d although I\u2019ll always miss you, I know that you are now in a better place, and I hope you know Iloveyou. You were the best Grandfather I could ever ask for.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n
